I get it – change is scary.

If you’ve worked as an employee your whole life, the thought of leaving the perceived comfort of the 9-5 can trigger a whole lot of uncomfortable feelings: fear, anxiety, self-doubt…

But if you’ve been hearing a voice inside telling you that it’s time to make a change, that it’s time to start your own business and take control of your life, I really encourage you not to let fear stop you!

Don’t let negative self-talk stop you from getting started

If you’ve been thinking about starting a business for a while, you probably have a whole range of “what ifs” dancing around your head: ⁣

  • ⁣“What if” I get no clients
  •  “What if” my family/friends judge me.
  • “What if” I fail!⁣
  • “What if” I make no money

⁣Sometimes our brains like to go into survival mode by telling us the worst-case scenario “what ifs”. But we can choose to think positively!⁣

  • “What if” everything works out⁣
  • “What if” your business is a huge success!⁣
  • “What if” you get to work with inspirational clients
  • “What if” you make more money than ever before
  • “What if” you build the life of your dreams!!⁣

⁣And the truth is that you will never know until you give your business a go! And in my opinion, there is nothing worse than not knowing. ⁣

Taking consistent imperfect action is the only way to move forward

Are you a girl in motion?

A lot of people ask me why I named my business 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. And the reason why I chose that name is that I am a true believer in the importance of taking action.

A lot of people talk and talk, research, plan, and keep talking about starting a business, but not many of them have the courage to put themselves out there and take action.

Because let me tell you – planning and talking are safe. There is no risk of failing, of being made fun of on social media, or of being judged by the people we love. It is easy to hide behind a computer and write a business plan, but it is hard to make yourself vulnerable and take your vision into the real world.

The good news is, that it’s not all or nothing! Even taking small, baby steps will bring you closer to your goals than months of planning ever will.

Taking imperfect action, even if you are scared to death, even if you have a million doubts….that is the only way to move forward!

Once you put your wheels in motion things start to happen! And lots of small steps combined together can build a life-changing business.

Remember: Your business is a journey, not a destination

When I handed in my notice back in 2014 I would have never imagined that my business would look like it does now.

I started my journey into self-employment writing property descriptions for a Spain-based start-up. That freelancing side-gig evolved into a thriving copywriting business that grew bigger than me. It wasn’t long till I had a team of writers working under my guidance, serving clients from around the world.

The pandemic forced me to pivot, with most contracts being put on hold. And this was a blessing! I had been wanting to change my business model for a while, and lockdown gave me the space I needed to re-focus and make the change that I knew in my heart I had to make. That’s when Girl in Motion was born.

So what’s the point of this story? Your business is a journey, not a destination.

That first gig back in 2014 allowed me to be where I am now. My business has evolved, I’ve learnt, I’ve grown, I’ve tried different things, I’ve failed and I’ve succeeded. But none of this would have happened if I hadn’t had the courage to take that first step.

Now I encourage you to think about the future: what could your business (and your life!) could look like in a few years if you have the courage to take that first step?

In Conclusion: Don’t let your decisions be governed by fear!

If you are reading this and struggling with the fear of starting your own business, let me remind you that being scared is good because it is a sign that you are pushing yourself and stepping outside of your comfort zone. And this is where the magic happens!

I encourage you not to let your decisions be governed by what could go wrong, and choose faith over fear:

  • Choose to be in control.
  • Choose freedom.
  • Choose to do what you love.
  • Choose your dreams.
  • Choose you!
